Environmental project on Great Keppel Island
Bunnings and Landcare Australia are collaborating with Woppaburra Elders, Capricornia Catchments, Gen Yadaba, and Livingstone Shire Council to facilitate a D.I.Y. environmental project on Great Keppel Island. This project aims to:
- Provide young people with the opportunity to actively participate in a D.I.Y. project, through the construction of a raised boardwalk over an aboriginal midden located between Monkey and Long Beach.
- Protect indigenous cultural heritage values of Keppel Island. The midden contains artefacts that date back to over 300 years ago. The midden is currently at risk due to erosion.
A key aspect of this project is providing young people with the opportunity to volunteer over a weekend to develop practical, hands on D.I.Y. skills, hear from Woppaburra Elders about the Island’s indigenous cultural heritage, and learn about the ecological values of the Keppel Bay Islands and surrounding reefs.
Thank you to everyone who expressed their interest in volunteering. We had a limited number of volunteer openings and applications are now closed.
We will keep the local and wider community updated about this fantastic project.
