VicTrack funding for Landcare Groups – Expression of Interest

Overview

Landcare Australia and VicTrack are working in partnership to fund Landcare activities on vacant railway land, rail trails and historic railways in Victoria. Landcare Australia is inviting the Landcare community with an interest in working on VicTrack land to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for projects up to three years in length.

Vacant VicTrack land often contains high-quality remnant vegetation, and may be home to some of Victoria’s most endangered species and ecological communities, particularly grasslands. It also provides important regional biodiversity corridors, linking fragmented areas and assisting animals to move through the landscape.

Project Funding Available

Landcare Australia is seeking expressions of interest for projects requiring between $10,000 and $30,000 per annum, over a one- to three-year period.

Key Dates

EOI opens: Thursday 19 October 2017
EOI closes: Friday 15 December 2017
Detailed application due for successful EOIs: 28 February 2018
Final approval of detailed application: June 2018
Project commencement: July 2018

Eligibility

The Landcare Australia – VicTrack Funding is open to all volunteer-based community groups that embrace the Landcare ethos. This includes, but is not limited to, Landcare, Farming Systems, Bushcare and ‘Friends of’ groups.

We are looking for groups to undertake projects that restore, protect or enhance environmental values on vacant VicTrack land, through activities such as weed control, revegetation, and threatened species management.

Other conditions:

  • Projects can include capital works (e.g. fencing, soil moving, path improvements);
  • Community education is encouraged, through activities such as planting days, working bees, guided walks and/or signage;
  • Partnerships with multiple stakeholders are also encouraged;
  • Schools and pre-schools are not eligible to receive funding under this program – instead they are invited to apply for Junior Landcare grants as they become available; and
  • Groups with project reports still outstanding from previous grants are ineligible for further funding until all reporting requirements are met.

Where is VicTrack’s vacant land?
Please refer to ‘Landcare Australia VicTrack Funding Map. This map shows the VicTrack network and vacant land. Not all of the land on this map is ‘vacant’, some areas are utilised for active rail, others are leased to councils or other land managers.

You can use this map to determine whether VicTrack might have vacant land in the area your group manages. On the map, locations indicated in green text are in proximity to vacant land. Please use the zoom function to enable readability. Downloading a .kmz file via RailMap may also be useful in identifying VicTrack land using GIS software, such as GoogleEarth.

We realise the limitations of the available mapping, so please contact Landcare Australia at grants@landcareaustralia.com.au or (03) 8631 7800 to confirm whether the land you are interested in working on is vacant VicTrack land, or to help identify other potential sites in the area your group manages.

How do I submit an EOI?

Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis, and will be reviewed as we receive them. In order to be eligible for funding in July 2018 for the 2018/19 financial year, please submit your EOI before 15 December 2017.

Groups are invited to submit an EOI online through the Landcare Australia Communities Portal. To submit an EOI:

  1. Login to the Landcare Australia Communities Portal. If you have applied for a grant on the portal in the past, your username will be your email address. If you have not applied for a grant before, you can register as a user here.
  2. Click on ‘Landcare Australia – Victrack Funding 2018’.
  3. Click on ‘Create Application’.
  4. If you wish to leave a partially completed application, press ‘Save’ and log out. You can log back in and continue to edit your application form until you are ready to submit.
  5. To submit your application, select the ‘Is application complete?’ checkbox and press ‘Save’.
  6. You will receive a confirmation email when your application has been successfully submitted. If you do not receive an email, please ensure you check your junk mail.

It is important you attach an aerial map of the land you would like to work on, so Landcare Australia can check the status of VicTrack’s land parcel, and assess its feasibility for project works.
