Volunteer with landcare to connect with nature, meet new people, improve your health and help care for the environment
Have you ever wondered who takes cares of the local bushland, waterways or coastline where you live or work? Across Australia, there are over 6,000 landcare groups and other community-led environmental groups working tirelessly to restore, enhance and protect the local environmental on behalf of their local community.
Give back to your community
Groups are always looking for volunteers to help them with their important landcare work. Whether you have time to get involved once a week, once a month or once a year, every contribution makes a difference. Volunteering with landcare is a wonderful way to help you connect with nature, enjoy being outdoors, socialising and doing something that matters for the environment.
Landcare is for everyone
There’s never a dull moment being a landcarer. From citizen science to community talks, there really is something for everyone! Landcare activities could include weeding, planting, mulching, installing next boxes, protect endangered species, counting koalas or birds, plant propagation, seed collection, bush regeneration, litter collection and audit, a guided walk and so much more!
Landcare champion and ABC TV presenter, Costa Georgiadis, is always talking about the impact of landcare on people, the environment, and communities as he journeys across Australia…including enjoying a cup of tea after the landcare work!

How to volunteer
With over 6,000 groups across the country involved in landcare activities, there will be local group near you
- Search the National Landcare Directory for a group near you. If you can’t find a group listed locally, contact your council who can put you in touch with the local groups they support. You can also contact the Landcare Peak body in your region, we have listed them here.
- If you are a young adult (18-35yrs) check out organisations like Intrepid Landcare, Co-Exist Australia and Greater Sydney Landcare.
- Go social – Search Facebook and Instagram for a group, they are often very active on social media promoting their events.
- Keep an eye on your local media – landcare groups are regularly featured in local newspapers and radio – especially when they are looking for extra pair of caring hands.
Volunteer your skills!
- Many groups need help from people who like woodwork and can help them make and maintain birdhouses and nesting boxes for different species like birds, possums and bats. Every animal needs a home!
- Rural groups may need help installing fencing.
- You don’t need to get your hands dirty! You can volunteer your professional skills including graphic design, website updates, newsletter writing, posting social media posts, applying for grants, bookkeeping, event management or fundraising.
