Landcare is at the forefront of disaster recovery projects
With the increasing impact of a changing climate including bushfires, drought and floods, landcare is best placed to lead disaster recovery projects that restore landscapes, biodiversity and communities. Local landcare groups and volunteers understand the landscape, the habitats for native plants and animals, and how to mobilise the community to come together to start work on environmental restoration.
Landcare Australia manages national disaster recovery programs to support the needs of landcare groups and other community-led environmental groups, farmers and landowners respond to the impact of a natural disaster. We work with landcare groups and volunteers who live in the impacted areas who have an understanding of the landscape and often know the people who have been affected, making them one of the first responders in the local community.
Landcare Australia uses funding from corporate partners and donors to help the landcare community use their local knowledge and expertise with projects that will restore essential wildlife habitat, build shelterbelts and fences, support the protection of waterways, manage weeds and feral animals, work with Traditional Owners and First Nations organisations, and host local community workshops, amongst other recovery activities.
Landcare Australia Bushfire Recovery Grants Program
In 2020, the Landcare Australia Bushfire Recovery Grants program awarded 23 grants valued at $307,212.00 (ex GST). The funding supported landcare groups, farmers and other community-led environmental groups located in bushfire affected areas across Australia with their bushfire recovery projects following the 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires.
WIRES Landcare Australia Wildlife Relief and Recovery Grants
WIRES and Landcare Australia partnered to deliver $1.185million in grants for bushfire recovery projects following the 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires. The funding was provided to Landcare Australia as a result of donations made to WIRES.
Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery Project
In May 2021, the former Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley announced the $14 million Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery Grants program. The program supported recovery projects in seven government-designated regions impacted by the 2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and South Australia.
