Landcare Australia’s position on the Nature Repair Market Bill
Landcare Australia welcomes the introduction of the Nature Repair Market Bill into Parliament by the Hon. Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water.
Dr Shane Norrish, CEO of Landcare Australia was pleased the legislation offers potential for securing investment to restore the condition of natural areas, increase biodiversity and support the outstanding work of landcarers and others.
“This legislation can potentially unlock the significant investment we know is required to turn around Australia’s habitat decline and loss. Landcarers have been working for decades to restore and protect Australia’s landscapes, often with short term funding cycles. The new legislation will allow landcarers, farmers, First Nations people and private landholders to participate in a Nature Repair Market structured to support greater investment from the business sector over the long term. A well-designed new market can scale up the investment to drive the substantial on-ground work required for repairing and protecting our precious natural assets. Ideally, the Nature Repair activities funded by private sector investment can become an important part of the longer-term solution to preventing biodiversity loss, and further supporting the land and water that sustains us.”
