Congratulations to the Victoria Coastcare team on the completion of another successful Summer by the Sea program.

In a year that marked the huge milestone of 30 years since Summer by the Sea began as the Summer Activities Program in 1996, more than 2000 people participated in 115 events, in 44 locations across Victoria this summer.

Many people have shaped this fantastic program over the years, and it’s wonderful to be able to share the stories of two individuals who were part of the early program – Tracey Pennington and Di Moore.

Tracey was part of the very first Summer by the Sea program in 1996. She describes Rockpool Rambles as a standout activity and has fond memories of a show that followed a city family holidaying on the coast and discovering how important coastal areas are after an eye-opening encounter with Coastcare Ranger Rob.

When asked why the program has lasted so long, Tracey says:

“The fun, exploration and discoveries continue to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to appreciate and care for what they came to enjoy. I think it’s more important than ever today to get young people into nature – for their wellbeing and to inspire a love of our beautiful coastal and marine environments for future generations.”

For Di Moore, who still works with DEECA in Victoria, Summer by the Sea started while she was at university. She trained as a volunteer campground host / Summer Activities coordinator along with 40 volunteers from across the state.

When asked about the long-term impact of Summer by the Sea, Di reflects:

“I am testament to the legacy of those involved – volunteers and participants alike – many of whom have gone on to careers in marine and coastal protection and management. Survey data shows that most people who take part in the program value and continue to care for the marine and coastal environment with greater appreciation and understanding.”

From volunteer to facilitator, Summer by the Sea has not only sparked curiosity and care for the coast, it has left a lasting legacy – shaping careers, inspiring stewardship, and connecting generations to Victoria’s beautiful marine and coastal environments.

*Final numbers may vary, as the team awaits final completion reports for a full data set.
