Landcare CarbonSMART delivering benefits to nature and communities

For over 35 years, Landcare Australia has been fostering environmental stewardship across Australia in partnership with farmers, landowners, community groups, schools and corporations. In response to the escalating climate and biodiversity loss crises, Landcare Australia is proud to introduce Landcare CarbonSMART, an important initiative designed to provide high-quality Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) from eligible projects that deliver benefits to nature and communities.

Landcare Australia is uniquely positioned to address the urgent need for climate action and sustainable land management. With our extensive network, brand recognition, and expertise, we are poised to make a significant impact. Environmental Plantings projects, particularly those that benefit nature and communities, present an opportunity to support financial self-determination, enhance biodiversity, and amplify community impact.

How Landcare CarbonSMART Works

Landcare CarbonSMART delivers projects under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme, managed by the Clean Energy Regulator. Our projects focus on the Reforestation by Environmental and Mallee Plantings (REMP) 2024 method. This involves planting a diverse mix of local native species on degraded land to restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and sequester carbon.

Landcare Australia prioritises working directly with eligible landholders to integrate environmental planting projects into their farm business plans, supporting both economic and environmental value.

ACCUs are treated as financial products under the Corporations Act 2001 (the Act). Landcare CarbonSMART ACCU generating projects are only offered to eligible landholders who are wholesale clients under the Act.

Key Features of Landcare CarbonSMART

  1. High-Quality Reforestation Projects: Our projects are carefully selected and monitored to ensure they deliver outstanding ecological benefits. We work with stakeholders to identify and support priority regional restoration projects and employ robust metrics to measure both short-term and long-term outcomes.

  2. Landholder first: With over 30 years’ experience working with landholders – we prioritise their needs and perspectives to actively involve them in decision-making, ensuring their knowledge and experiences shape project design. We emphasise creating solutions that are practical and beneficial for landholders.

  3. Giving back: Any surpluses generated by Landcare Australia are utilised in line with our objects as a registered environmental charity which includes supporting land care projects across the country.

  4. Commitment to transparency: We are dedicated to maintaining open and transparent processes with landholders and funding partners. By providing current and comprehensive information, we support them to make knowledgeable decisions amid the complexities of environmental markets.

  5. Build capacity: We actively seek to involve and support Landcare groups and First Nations organisations to participate in the design, development and execution of projects managed by Landcare Australia. This collaboration enhances the capacity and reach of these community groups.

Landcare CarbonSmart FAQs

Landcare Australia is working in partnership with GreenCollar, the leading developer of nature-based carbon projects in Australia. GreenCollar always aims to build additional environmental and social benefits, such as supporting landholders to generate additional income streams, into all its projects and it is this best-practice approach that is essential in differentiating Landcare CarbonSMART Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

Landcare CarbonSMART will broker ACCUs generated from carefully selected, high integrity projects developed by GreenCollar. All projects from which Landcare CarbonSMART ACCUs are generated have been confirmed by Landcare Australia as delivering strong and genuine ecological and biodiversity co-benefits to the local environment.

As the project developer, GreenCollar will execute the sale and complete the transfer of credits to the buyer’s ANREU account to go towards their organisational objects or retire them on behalf of the buyer and issue retirement certification.

The purchase of Landcare CarbonSMART credits will deliver verified carbon sequestration with confirmed ecological co-benefits by Landcare Australia. As one of Australia’s longest standing and respected community based not-for-profit environmental organisations – supporting over 140,000 individuals across 6,000 community led groups around the country – Landcare Australia has the trusted know-how based on three decades of environmental and conservation stewardship.

Australian sourced credits have the additional benefit of generating positive local improvements that vary dependant on the generation methodology as well as removing harmful excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

An ecological co-benefit is where the actions taken to sequester carbon and generate carbon credits has the additional benefit of improvements to native ecosystems impacted by a variety of human influences.

Improvements may include improved native fauna habitat, improved ecosystem function, protection of threatened species and improved water quality when connected to natural waterways.
