Indigenous-Led Biodiversity Monitoring

Project Overview

Gulf Regional Economic Aboriginal Trust (GREAT) is developing the Indigenous-led biodiversity monitoring project on Delta Downs Station in Queensland’s Gulf region. The project integrates Indigenous ecological knowledge with new tools and training, engaging rangers and station staff to build long-term biodiversity monitoring capacity and future market opportunities.

With a focus on integrating Indigenous ecological knowledge and building local data collection capacity, this project aims to build culturally appropriate tools and training to support long-term biodiversity outcomes in the region.  

Project Goals

  • Develop biodiversity monitoring tools adapted to Indigenous priorities and capacity.
  • Engage rangers and station staff in biodiversity skill development.
  • Build a strong foundation for long-term biodiversity data and reporting.
  • Contribute to future natural capital or biodiversity market opportunities for Indigenous landholders.

Key Activities

  • Stakeholder planning and co-design workshops.
  • Desktop biodiversity data review and initial reporting.
  • Ranger training and biodiversity monitoring field days.
  • Development of interpretive communications for community and youth.
  • Final reporting and integration of findings into biodiversity business planning.
